Scotland: Walking, Color, School, Family, and Bums

East Sands beach - prime time for our first Sea Glass hunting.  We found some good ones!
You can see the cathedral from the 1400s behind us

One of River's primary modes of transportation these days!

One of the fun surprises of Scotland is a few new playground apparati ;-) that we have gotten to enjoy.  Here is the awesome Huge swing!

For the first month, walking was our only way of getting around.  Notice how the girls invented a way for all three of the kids to ride in the stroller when they were tired!  We definitely put our walking time in - Janelle added it up one day in September - 6 hours of walking!!

Walking Esther to school (her 2nd school).  You can tell what school it is by the uniforms (it took a little convincing that blue was going to be an acceptable color for her)!

It's not exactly warm right now, but it also does not rain every day, so we have been really thankful for the sunshine when it comes!

More walking!

Our neighbor in the apartment is a 6 year-old whom Esther has enjoyed playing with - very fun!

This is the park that is immediately behind our house.  Dancing and singing are standard activities that could occur at any time!

River is getting super-big and strong.  He has been working on the push-up position (plank) and can now hold it for about 5 seconds.  We were trying to convince our girls to do tummy-time, but River hangs out on his tummy all the time; I think we are getting a taste of one difference between boys and girls.

Future favorite sport?  Not that I am pushing for that at all!  ;-)

Esther is taking violin lessons now, which she chose to do and committed to try for a year.  So far she has been enjoying it (except sometimes that part about practicing a few minutes each day)

Watching Esther work on writing and reading has inspired Bella who now loves working on her letters.  She works on them almost every day and can now write her name really well (with a little help on the 'A').

Janelle has done an amazing job making our Flat into a home (on a budget)!!

River's Room - the girls are doing so awesome playing with River.  Bella's favorite words to River, especially in the morning are, "Hi sweety boy! Hi sweety boy!  You are the sweetest boy in the whole world" (repeat about 8 times!)
Canvases that Janelle made for River's room with the virtues.  Pretty awesome!

We call this room the "Great Room"

Nana's painting on the other side of the Great Room.

Canvases that Janelle made for our room.  Janelle and Esther have been learning to sew on Esther's new pink sewing machine, so Janelle made a bunch of pillowcases with colorful fabric that she bought.  We love our color!
Our "new" car!  After a month of walking everywhere, we decided that it was time for a car.  In the UK, you are rewarded for having a smaller car, so we are cooperating with the system in our little Toyota Corolla (which is still bigger than a lot of the cars here).  We are really thankful for our car (and the chance to get good at driving on the left).
Things are going well here.  We really are having fun as a family.  One of the great gifts has been the community of people that we are already getting to know.  Many of the students in the Divinity School are in a similar place of life to us, and the wives do a really good job of connecting.  We have started to make some new good friends, which we are so thankful for.

We have also found a church, the Free Church of Scotland, that we are excited about.  Our new church experiences have definitely made us appreciate even more what we had in Boulder and Pasadena, but we are thankful for this little community to call home, and although they don't have the programs for children that we are used to, there are loving adults who are there and are starting to get to know Esther and Bella (it may have sped up that process that they decided to dance in the aisles last Sunday, which I gathered is a very new thing for this church!).  I also got to lead music a couple weeks ago at the service, which was really a gift to me.

My school started in mid-September.  I am working on a one year Masters now that I hope will roll over into a PhD when it is done.  My classes are good and pretty intense.  We have tons of reading and almost all primary sources (stuff like Irenaeus and Augustine and Athanasius and Thomas Aquinas), mostly from the first 4 centuries of the church. Here's how I described it to a friend recently:
School has been life-giving still, but in a new way.  Last year felt more like being fed delicious smoothies all day - tastes delicious, not much chewing, but good sustenance.  This year has so far felt like eating steak and potatoes - takes some cutting and chewing; you have to cut off some fat; but a good bite tastes really good and you know it is going to keep you full and strong longer.  Hopefully the analogy makes sense - here we read almost only primary sources so far, and I am being exposed to theological concepts and points of view that I had no idea existed.  For example, my Trinity teacher has a very different (but still committed, evangelical Christian) take on the Trinity than I came in with!  Although that has been challenging, I have found that I am really glad to see other perspectives and question some of the things that I had assumed everyone thought were true. And, there are other teachers here who have a theological approach much more akin to mine, and when I get to learn from them, it is amazing!!  I have recently loved reading Irenaeus and Athanasius and seeing their understanding of the good news  of Jesus and the Incarnation (Jesus becoming man) that was MUCH bigger than just the problem of sin needing to be forgiven but was a grabbing onto a humanity that  was broken on the inside and alienated from God, sanctifying every step of human life (birth, childhood,...death, resurrection) and pulling that life up into a communion with God that is way beyond what Adam and Eve had in the garden but is exactly what God had in mind from the beginning.

Janelle and the girls and River are doing well.  The girls are on break from school right now, and when break is over, Esther will be starting at her 3rd school.  It is a long story, but the bottom line is that we feel this school is really going to be best for her, and we are really excited she gets to go there for the next 3-4 years.

We have been compiling our list of "Scottish" words that we have learned so far... here are a couple with context -
"bum" - bottom; at the park a mum said, "Don't sit on the grass or you'll get a wet bum!"
"tidy" - clean; at school the girls have "tidy-time" every day"
"brilliant" - awesome

Love to you from the Buckner family.  May you know the glory and presence of the Father in the Son through the Spirit this day and week.

Week One in Scotland...overnight flights, driving on the left, pink carpet...just a few of the gifts of the week!

Exactly one week ago, Janelle, Esther, Bella, River, Corine (Janelle's mom) and I were driving to the airport with 9 cardboard boxes, 1 suitcase, 1 bike box, 1 guitar, 6 carry-on bags, one giant double stroller, and one roll of tape (in case anything needed it).

Moving through airports with 3 kids and a ton of stuff was quite a chore...we needed every minute of our 2.5 hour layover in London, and we were very thankful for Corine!!

My wife is the master of fun colors and beautiful hair on little girls; Esther and Bella specialize in the faces!
We made it!  And we discovered an amazing park/playground right behind our "Flat"

This river runs by the playground, and it has a trail by it that runs for a few miles.  I ran some of it the other day and look forward to many runs along that path!!
Love the Old School Teeter Totter!

This is our friend, Justice Buchanan.  His dad, Travis, is doing a PhD at St Andrews and is actually an old friend from college.  It has been a HUGE blessing to have Travis (and his wife Jessica) here to give us many pointers and help us get settled in.

My school (St. Mary's) is behind that gate.  The building where I'll be taking classes this year was built in the mid 1500s! Many of the buildings in the city and the University were built around the late 1500s and early 1600s.  How amazing!

The North Sea in the background.  We have been SO thankful for Corine's help!  She has been amazing at putting together Ikea furniture, cleaning our Flat, loving on our kids.

An adventure/Tour day with Travis and Jessica and their kids took us to the Old Cathedral that was built in the 1400s and torn down by Protestants during the Scottish Reformation in the late 1500s.  St Andrews was the center of the Reformation in Scotland and my school, St Mary's, became the first (and central) Protestant training school for ministers in the late 1500s.
First Day of Primary One (UK version of Kindergarten) was today, and it went well.  Line of the day...Me - "Esther, did you meet any other new friends today (besides our neighbor)?" Esther - "Lots of kids wanted to play with me, but I told them all 'no'."

Esther loves that she gets to wear uniforms.  I'm sure I'm biased, but I'm pretty positive that she was the most beautiful little girl coming out of her classroom today!

Half-days for Bella.  She also had a great time.  We are so thankful that the girls got a good first day at school.

Walking to the beach after school.

Apparently sunny days like this are rare, so we decided to make the most of it.

Yes, that is the "Old Course" - the course where the British Open was first played and where is is still often played.  We are walking through!!

How about a swim in the North Sea?  Not too cold...if you compare it to ice water!  The girls didn't seem to mind.

River's first beach time.

Here we go!! We didn't stop until we were all the way in!

I was done with once, but they wanted to go again.  They were in the water WAY more that I could handle.  Please don't remind me that a 3 and 5 year-old little girl are tougher than I am...my ego can't handle it! ;-)

YES, this is the Chariots of Fire beach (where the running scene was filmed).  We are doing our best imitation.

As you can see, we have so much to be thankful for already, and we are having a lot of fun.

The actual settling in has been a process...it takes a while for everything to get in line (bank accounts, phone numbers, internet), and we went a couple days without mattresses.  But after Janelle and Corine made an epic 12-hour Ikea and Costco run, things started to shape up.  Our Flat is looking more and more like a home.  The pink carpet is perfect for our girls.  We are getting used to expecting rain.

We decided that we are not going to get a car for now, so we will be primarily a walking family.  I'm excited about that adventure and what that means for our pace of life and time together walking.

I had the realization yesterday while standing on the beach (that we just walked to from our home) and looking at this amazing historic city perched on the cliff while in my peripheral vision I can see the green for hole 18 of the Old Course...Wow...we seriously live here!  I was blown away by God's gifts to us that this is the place that we get to come live and study.  I know you may not believe me, but we really did not choose this place because of the city...I actually knew almost nothing about it.  We are here because of the professors here and what I want to study and because we felt like (as much as we could discern) that this is where God had us.

Now being here, I feel totally spoiled.  Wow.  I guess the only other word is THANKS.

I know there will be many challenges and tons of work ahead, but for now we are simply enjoying our new home and God's good gifts.

God's grace and peace to you in Christ through the Spirit this day.

Masters of Divinity, Fuller Theological Seminary...CHECK!!

Well, so much for "keeping up with the blog posts."  For those of you who have been checking over the last 7 weeks, sorry!  Here is a quick update on the eve of my graduation from Fuller.

River's room - in our closet!

His first "business casual" outfit - one of our good friends out here and his wife sewed River a bunch of amazing Onesies, including a basketball, football, and baseball that will fit in the corresponding professional season!

It was such a blessing to have Gigi out for River's first week +.  Her loving the girls and doing fun things with them was so great, especially because Fuller doesn't give their students paternity leave (go figure!).

Bowling pins that Esther made with Gigi in one of their fun crafts.

Some of Janelle's good friends from our church who had little boys a couple weeks before we did.  We are so thankful for Knox Presbyterian Church - what a wonderful, welcoming, family-loving worshiping community.  It's going to be hard to leave our Knox family.

Dadda's 33!!

Just a little hoe-down with Mickey at Disneyland - no big deal!

One of our favorite activities - walking/running to preschool 3x/week.  Then Janelle and I often went for a run together.  It is really cool how fun it can be to walk places.  We walk places here way more than we drive, and it has been so refreshing!

My first half-marathon - the Pasadena Half.  Really a fun day running through all of the iconic Pasadena sights, and I made my goals of raising money for a well in Africa and sub-7:00 miles (6:57) - so grateful!

YeeHaw!

I gave River his first haircut and Janelle and I decided that it would only be right to shave my head to match him!

River's first Disneyland day - really taking it in!

What color eyes is he going to have?  Looks blue here?  Still not sure!

Well, I hope those pictures get you up to speed a bit!  We have had a really great (and full) last 7 weeks.  River is healthy and doing well.  After 9.5 years at Fuller, (8.5 of those part-time), I will graduate tomorrow (6/9) with a Masters in Divinity.  Our house is almost all packed up.  Gigi and Grandpa (Forrest's parents) are out for the weekend for graduation and helping move us back to Boulder.  On Monday we are going to Disneyland for one last day and then dropping Janelle, Esther, Bella, River, and Gigi off at the airport to head to Colorado that night.  Grandpa and I will be driving the Uhaul on Tuesday!  Back in Colorado by June 13.

I am so thankful for my time at Fuller.  I have grown and been challenged in so many amazing ways through my Fuller education.  I am also really grateful for this year on campus.  There are many amazing gifts from being out here that I don't think I would have gotten had we not made this move.  God has used the professors here, the learning community, the library, and the culture of Fuller Pasadena to transform and grow me.

As simple as I can put it, probably the best thing about coming out here this year is that my understanding of the gospel (good news of Jesus) has really expanded.  What used to be mostly about individuals getting to know God has expanded to include individuals getting to know God while being grafted into the community of the people of God for the purpose of participating in God's work in the world.  Also, I have found that God's purposes in creating humans was not just for relationship with him (as important as that is), but also for being fully human - creating culture, cultivating culture, making the most of this world!

If you'd like to talk more about any of those thoughts, I'd be delighted to!

I hope you are well and that your summer is starting great!
